In the early 1970's, BBC producer Colin Thomas and I were at the Oxford Animation festival and saw a film by John Hubley called "a windy day" the freshness and charm in the unscripted voice recordings (his own children at play) was very striking. the unstructured, loose way of speaking when set against the tightly controlled medium of animation was unusual.
Colin then developed an "animated conversations" proposal, put it to the BBC and got a small budget to make a cut-out cartoon based on a recording he made for animator Nancy Edell called Chef v Waiter. It didn't get much of a response but Colin persevered and using a tape of my son Matthew applying for a place in a choir, I animated Audition.
Broadcast at Christmas it drew considerable praise enabling Colin to persuade the BBC to fund a series of 6 films using the same technique. Some of the animators used were: Pete and Dave (Aardman), Derek Hayes, Andy Walker, Henry Lutman and myself. A second series was made after which the idea was taken up by Channel 4 wholly animated by Aardman and this led to the incredibly popular Creature Comforts.
